In North Georgia, fall is not a season. It is an argument.
From late September through early November, the mountains around Blue Ridge become the reason people set the reminder on their phone twelve months in advance. The Chattahoochee National Forest flushes amber and orange from the ridgelines down through the valleys, and even the drive up from Atlanta earns it.
The colour starts early and builds slowly.
Higher elevations — Brasstown Bald and the upper Aska trail system — begin to turn in early October. By mid-month the colour has moved into the valleys, wrapping the road into Blue Ridge and painting the tree line behind our cabins in something close to rust. The peak runs roughly two weeks. Those are the two weeks to be here.
The orchard is in full swing.
Mercier Orchards does its best work in fall. Apple picking season runs through October, the cidery is pouring fresh harvest cider, and the bakery line for fried apple pies moves slow because people keep stopping to talk. Plan to spend more time than you think you will.
The railway is at its finest.
The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway runs dedicated fall rides for good reason — the 26-mile track along the Toccoa River is covered in colour. Amber canopy above, cold river below, three hours of doing nothing useful. Book ahead. These sell out.
Evenings belong to the hot tub.
When the temperature drops in October, the hot tubs come into their own. After a day on the Aska trails or a long afternoon at the orchard, stepping into warm water under a cooling sky with the trees quiet around you — that is the evening worth driving for.

Fall is our most requested season. October weekends go early. If you have dates in mind, do not wait — a few slow days in the mountains at peak colour is a rare and renewable thing, but only if you plan for it.
